Do's and Don'ts in the Kitchen

  • DO make sure that, if you have a window near the stove, the curtains are tied back and will not blow near a flame or burner.

  • DO check the kitchen before going to bed. Oven off? Coffee pot unplugged?

  • DO keep cook top surfaces clean. Grease buildups can catch fire.

  • DO turn pan handles away from the cook top edge. A bumped handle can cause spills that can result in painful burns.

  • DON'T wear loose-fitting clothes when you cook, and don't reach across the top of the stove when you are cooking.

  • DON'T let grease build up on your stove or oven.

  • DON'T use water or flour to put out a cooking fire. Wet dishcloths or towels are also dangerous.

  • DON'T leave food unattended on the stove. If you must leave the kitchen, take a utensil along as a reminder.
