Do's and Don'ts in the Kitchen

DO make sure that, if you have a window near the stove, the curtains are tied back and will not blow near a flame or burner.

DO check the kitchen before going to bed. Oven off? Coffee pot unplugged?

DO keep cook top surfaces clean. Grease buildups can catch fire.

DO turn pan handles away from the cook top edge. A bumped handle can cause spills that can result in painful burns.

DON'T wear loose-fitting clothes when you cook, and don't reach across the top of the stove when you are cooking.

DON'T let grease build up on your stove or oven.

DON'T use water or flour to put out a cooking fire. Wet dishcloths or towels are also dangerous.

DON'T leave food unattended on the stove. If you must leave the kitchen, take a utensil along as a reminder.
